There was a country (Chinua Achebe)

A part l'expression élégante "on dirait une Biafrais" sortie par une copine de fac et des références au kwashiorkor lues récemment à propos d'enfants haïtiens, je savais peu de choses sur la guerre du Biafra. Il se trouve que le dernier livre de Chinua Achebe traite de ce sujet. Mêlant récit autobiographique, poèmes et histoire, Chinua Achebe nous raconte ce conflit qui a opposé à la fin des années 60, le Nigeria et la république sécessionniste du Biafra, le génocide des Igbo et la corruption au sein des classes dirigeantes qui en sont les causes. J'aime beaucoup Chinua Achebe et j'ai trouvé que c'était l'occasion d'en apprendre plus à ce sujet.

J'ai beaucoup aimé la première partie où Chinua Achebe fait le récit de ses années d'études et de ses premiers pas en tant qu'écrivain. En particulier, une anecdote charmante où il raconte l'envoi de son manuscrit à Londres pour le faire dactylographier professionnellement.

La partie sur l'indépendance du Nigeria, le récit du conflit, des souffrances de la population du Biafra sont bien sûr difficiles. Chinua Achebe décrit bien les forces en présence, la réaction de la communauté internationale. Tout est abondamment documenté. Parfois trop. J'ai justement trouvé les notes trop abondantes et j'ai renoncé à les lire dans leur intégralité. Et pourtant certaines étaient intéressantes.

Je suis personnellement très peu touchée par la poésie (je n'y comprends pratiquement rien), les poèmes qui terminent certains chapitres ne m'ont pas apporté beaucoup.

On pourra peut-être reprocher à Chinua Achebe de prendre fait et cause pour le Biafra, puisqu'il est lui-même Igbo. Mais il explique son point de vue de manière détaillée (je n'ose dire objective) et pour cela, le livre est très intéressant.

J'ai beaucoup aimé la critique du livre de Noo Saro-Wiwa dans le Guardian.

THE NIGERIAN ARGUMENT

Nigeria's position on Biafra, as I understand it, was hinged on the premise that if Biafra was allowed to secede then a number of other ethnic nationalities within Nigeria would follow suit. The Nigerian government, therefore, had to block Biafra's secession to prevent the dissolution of Nigeria.

What then were we to do as writers? What was our role in our new country? How were we to think about the use of our talents? I can say that when a number of us decided that we would be writers, we had not thought through these questions very clearly. In fact, we did not have a clue what we were up against. What I can say is that it was clear to many of us that an indigenous African literary renaissance was overdue. A major objective was to challenge stereotypes, myths, and the image of ourselves and our continent, and to recast them through–prose, poetry, essays, and books for our children. That was my overall goal.

When a number of us decided to pick up the pen and make writing a career there was no African literature as we know it today.

It was important to us that a body of work be developed of the highest possible quality that would oppose the negative discourse in some of the novels we encountered. By "writing back" to the West we were attempting to reshape the dialogue between the colonized and the colonizer. Our efforts, we hoped, would broaden the world's understanding, appreciation, and conceptualization of what literature meant when including the African voice and perspective. We were clearly engaged in what Ode Ogede aptly refers to as "the politics of representation."

This is another way of stating the face of what I consider to be my mission in life. My kind of storytelling has to add its voice to this universal storytelling before we can say, "Now we've heard it all." I worry when somebody from one particular tradition stands up and says, "The novel is dead, the story is dead." I find this to be unfair, to put it mildly. You told your own story, and now you're announcing the novel is dead. Well, I haven't told mine yet.
