The best bad thing (Yoshiko Uchida)
Rinko's mother asks her to spend her last month of vacation helping her widowed friend, Mrs. Hata. Don't you just love mothers who do others a service through their daughters. It's always easy to be helpful when you don't actually have to do anything. Sainthood is never very far. Anyway, Rinko reluctantly accepts to go. Of course, it turns out to be a very good experience, and Rinko learns a lot of things.
OK, that seems pretty disillusioned, and I assume that's why it is a story for children. I decided to read it to learn more about the Japanese American experience in the USA, and because I liked the picture on the cover. It's a cute book, but I will have to find a more grown-up story.
