Revenge Wears Prada (Lauren Weisberger)

J'avais beaucoup aimé The Devil Wears Prada lorsque je l'ai lu il y a 7 ou 8 ans. J'avais moins apprécié le film : trop édulcoré. Moi qui attendais la fameuse scène à Paris, j'ai été très déçue. J'avais lu l'autre roman de Lauren Weisberger (everyone worth knowing) mais je ne me souviens même plus de l'histoire. Je crois que je l'avais trouvé agréable à lire mais sans plus. Je me demandais donc comment le diable allait se venger dans cette suite. Je me le demande encore. Et oui, je n'ai même pas lu la moitié du livre.

Pourtant, j'étais prévenue. La moyenne des notes sur Goodreads atteignait 2,74/5, mais j'ai voulu essayer. J'avais donc choisi l'édition en gros caractères (à partir d'un certain âge...), ce qui me donnait plus de 600 pages à lire. Le roman commence par un cauchemar. Dix ans après, Miranda Priestly revient hanter les nuits d'Andy. Et pas n'importe quelle nuit. Andy se marie dans la journée à un beau jeune homme de bonne famille, Max Harrison. Elle trouve dans le sac de son mari une lettre de sa future belle-mère qui trouve qu'Andy n'est pas assez bien pour la famille, d'autant qu'égoïstement elle veut continuer à travailler à son magazine The Plunge (qui traite de mariages très haut de gamme), et que c'est un signe si Max a retrouvé son ex aux Bermudes pendant qu'il enterrait sa vie de garçon. Bref, Andy a des doutes, mais se marie quand même. A des nausées depuis qu'elle a lu la lettre. Max et elle ne peuvent donc pas consommer leur union. Ils rentrent à New York. Andy se demande si Max l'a trompée avec Katherine von Herzog (évidemment, elle ne pouvait qu'être européenne), son ex, pendant qu'il était aux Bermudes. Max, qu'on nous a présenté comme le meilleur ami d'Andy, l'amour de sa vie, ce play-boy qui s'est rangé quand il a rencontré Andy... Andy n'ose pourtant pas lui parler de cette lettre. Et nous arrivons page 189 à ce passage qui m'a bien agacée.

What she'd failed to envision, of course, was the piece of this puzzle that kept it from being 100 percent fantastic news (never mind the nagging little detail that she'd been pregnant at her own wedding, and anyone with a kindergarten education could do the calculations): namely, she wasn't sure she could trust the father of her child, her baby's grandmother hated her, and she had thirteen seconds away from suggesting a break when she found out she was pregnant. Talk about a game-changer. All the perfectly logical rationalizations that had convinced her she should leave if he'd cheated with Katherine – they weren't bound to each other by anything more than a legal document, they didn't have any children whose lives they would be wrecking – had gone up in smoke with a plastic cup of pee and lone phone call from a male nurse.

J'ai tenu encore 20 pages. Et j'ai arrêté quand Andy parle à sa mère d'Alex, son ex, qui après avoir rompu avec Andy parce qu'elle avait trop changé depuis son passage à Runway, était parti enseigner dans le Mississippi. Après un passage dans le Vermont, Alex revient à New York avec sa copine. Euh, elle retourne avec lui à la fin ? J'ai laissé tomber parce qu'après tout, j'ai d'autres livres à lire. D'ailleurs si vous voulez connaître toute l'histoire, elle est là.
